MANIX is a clinically proven combination of indigenous medicines in the treatment of male infertility. Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari): The roots of Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) are fleshy, whitish-brown in color, slightly sweet in taste, emollient, cooling, nervine tonic and possesses rejuvenating, carminative and aphrodisiac properties. Different scientific studies have proved its efficacy in a number of physical and mental ailments.

The antioxidant, antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic activity of cinnamomum tamala may address to certain etiologies in male infertility. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of cinnamon extract on spermatogenesis and hormonal axis of pituitary gonad in mice. The results revealed significant increase (P<0.05) in the number of spermatogonia, spermatocyte, spermatid, Sertoli and Leydig cells in treated animals. Also, the results showed significant increase (P<0.05) in the concentration of LH, FSH and Testosterone hormones among treated animals. This effect could be due to the presence of compounds in cinnamon which affect the hypothalamus-pituitary axis and has thus increased concentrations of these hormones. Cinnamomum zeylanicum can benefit in male sexual performance in a number of ways viz. stimulating spermatogenesis, improving sperm quality, balancing critical testicular oxidant-antioxidant levels, and preventing the testicular damage due to diabetes or environmental toxins implicated in causation of testicular failure or male infertility.

Extract of Tinospora cordifolia stem possess significant aphrodisiac activity. T. cordifolia is known as a medhya rasayana (learning and memory enhancer) in Ayurveda. Tinospora cordifolia treatment has proven antioxidant action in the tissues of diabetic rats. The antihepatotoxic activity of T. cordifolia has been demonstrated in CCl4 induced liver damage, normalizing liver function as assessed by morphological, biochemical (SGPT, SGOT, serum alkaline phosphatase, serum bilirubin) and functional tests.

Dioscorea bulbifera (Varahikand): Dioscorea species has various pharmacological active constituents having cytotoxic, immunomodulating, antimicrobial, and anabolising, hormonal, anti-osteoporotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic activities. It is also used as purgative, spermopoitic, aphrodisiac, rejuvenator and antihelminthic.

The diosgenin in dioscorea bulbifera is a compound that is the precursor to steroid hormones. Diosgenin can be converted into pregnenolone, an ultimate precursor in the human body to more than 150 adrenal steroids. Thus, pregnenolone may be responsible for increased energy level, male hormones progesterone or testosterone, immune defenses, inflammation, mood and sexual enjoyment associated with dioscorea administration.

Sesamin, the active component in sesamum seeds, has been found to possess the hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.

A study conducted in animal models showed significant body weight gains and increase in the raw testicular weights with sesame extract administration. The sperm count including the motility and morphology was improved; testosterone levels increased and FSH levels were significantly decreased. Sesame enhances the process of spermatogenesis in a dose related manner through a complex hormonal interplay at the level of the male hypothalamo-pituitary-testicular (HPT)-axis and estrogen receptors. The spermatogenic effect of sesame may also be attributed to increased testosterone levels and antioxidant activity. Sesame may also prevent the genotoxicity from environmental substances involved in causation of male infertility by producing spermatogenic abnormalities. Sesamum improve glucose profile and testicular parameters in a dose related manner in an animal study. Sesamum is also classified as an aphrodisiac which purifies and improves the quality of semen.

Tribulus terrestris is used in folk medicine as a tonic, aphrodisiac, palliative, astringent, stomachic, antihypertensive, diuretic and urinary anti-infective. Various studies on protodioscin, the major component of T. terrestris, indicate that it increases libido and erection, spermatogenesis, sperm motility, ejaculatory volume, muscle mass and testosterone in animal as well as human models. Hormonal effects of T. terrestris were also evaluated in primates, rabbit and rat to identify its usefulness in the management of erectile dysfunction. Both acute and chronic administration of T. terrestris at various concentrations was found to increase the hormones testosterone and dihydrotestosterone levels significantly, which could possibly be due to the presence of steroidal glycosides, protodioscin, which may act either by binding to hormone receptors or to enzymes that metabolize hormones. T. terrestris extract also has phosphodiesterase inhibitory activity comparably similar to sildenafil, thus making it useful in erectile dysfunction.

Tribulus terrestris extract has also exhibited protective effect against cadmium (Cd)-induced testicular damage in rats. The protective effect is attributed to antioxidant activity and may also be indirectly by stimulating the testosterone production from Leydig cells. Similarly stimulatory actions on germinative and endocrine functions of testes, proerectile and aphrodisiac properties have been proven for T. terrestris.

In Ayurveda system the root tuber of pueraria tuberosa is effectively used as aphrodisiac, galactagogue and diuretic. Active principle in p.tuberosa, tuberosin, has antioxidant property. Tuberosine has direct scavenging potential for variety of free radicals like hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. The combined effects of activation of choline acetyltransferase, estrogenic, anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic and neuroprotective roles of p.tuberosa extract are supposed to produce net memory-enhancing effect.

Purified fruits are claimed to possess rejuvenating properties increasing longevity. It is also used as aphrodisiac, nerve-tonic and as anabolic medicine in the Ayurvedic system of therapy. Semecarpus anacardium has proven anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antiatherogenic, antihyperglycemic and fungistatic activities.

E. cardamomum was traditionally used in various gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and neural disorders. E. cardamomum has proven anti-inflammatory and analgesic action. These actions assisted with antihypertensive, fibrinolytic and antioxidant property may be beneficial in targeting the inflammatory and vascular causes of male infertility. The gastroprotective action may prevent the toxicity inducing potential of gastric irritant ingredients in a polyherbal preparation, if any.
